Wingate, NC
Wingate is a small town in eastern Union County, with 4,055 people in the 2020 census, sitting on U.S. 74 between Monroe and Marshville. The Town of Wingate Public Works Department runs water and sewer for customers in its service district, so homes in town and the university area are generally on public sewer. Step past that district and it is mostly farmland, woods and houses on larger lots, and those houses treat their own wastewater with a septic tank and drain field.
Those rural homes are the ones Dahl Septic Services works on. Farther out on roads like White Store Road, Olive Branch Road and Macedonia Church Road, a house without a septic system would be the exception. We are licensed and insured under NC license #9407I, our owner has over a decade in septic work, and we have a certified subsurface operator on the team. Sewer or septic
Is a Wingate Home on Sewer or Septic?
A Wingate address does not tell you much on its own, because the town sewer district stops well short of the town’s rural edges. Three quick checks settle it:
- Your utility bill. A Town of Wingate bill that lists water but no sewer charge points to a septic system. So does a private well.
- The yard. Green or black riser lids, a pump alarm on a post, or a long rectangle of slightly greener grass all point to a tank and drain field.
- The county permit file. Union County Environmental Health keeps septic permits by property, and a past permit will show the system type.
If none of that answers it, we can probe for the tank and dig down to the lids. Knowing where the tank sits also saves time the next time it needs pumping.
Soil
What the Soil Around Wingate Means for a Septic System
USDA soil survey maps for Union County show the ground around Wingate as mostly Badin, Tarrus, Cid and Goldston soils, which weathered out of the fine-grained Carolina Slate Belt rock that runs under this part of the county. A few traits from the official series descriptions matter for a drain field:
- Goldston soils are shallow, usually only 10 to 20 inches to soft rock, with lots of rock fragments mixed in.
- Cid soils drain slowly and hold a perched water table 1 to 2.5 feet down in winter and spring.
- Badin soils drain well but reach weathered bedrock at 20 to 40 inches.
Across the whole Union County survey, the NRCS rates roughly 7 in 10 rated acres as very limited for conventional septic absorption fields, mainly for depth to rock, wetness and slow percolation (from NRCS soil data). That is why the county often permits pump tanks and LPP fields on rural lots here, and why a drain field near Wingate should never be driven on, paved over or graded without a plan.
Services
Septic Work We Do Around Wingate
- Pumping. A complete pump-out of the tank, with a look at the baffles and the effluent filter. Most homes need it every 3 to 5 years.
- Inspections. For home sales, for owners, and to get a system ready for the county’s existing system inspection before an addition. Reports usually come the same day or the next.
- Repairs. Broken lines, failed baffles, pump and float problems and drain field trouble.
- New systems. Installs with concrete tanks, built to the county permit, plus the site work the job needs.
- LPP and drip maintenance. Union County’s state-mandated operation and maintenance program requires inspections of LPP, pre-treatment and pump systems. Our certified subsurface operator handles those visits, and we offer ongoing maintenance agreements.
- Decommissioning. Pumping and properly closing an old tank when a house moves to sewer or a new system replaces it.
We take cash, credit cards and checks.

Permits
Septic Permits for Land Around Wingate
Permits for the Wingate area come from Union County Environmental Health, On-site Water Protection Program, phone 704-283-3553. Their outline of the process:
- Apply for a soil and site evaluation. Once it is processed, the county schedules the visit.
- On evaluation day, the applicant provides a backhoe and operator on site. We can do that part.
- An Environmental Health Specialist or Licensed Soil Scientist evaluates the soil and flags any approved area as “Septic System Area.”
- An Improvement Permit is followed by a Construction Authorization, which is required to install the system and to get a building permit.
For a failing system, the owner or a representative requests a repair, and county staff visit before they issue a repair permit. For additions, the existing system inspection comes first.

FAQ
Wingate Septic Questions
Is my house in Wingate on sewer or on a septic system?
The Town of Wingate provides sewer to customers in its service district, which is mostly in and close to town. Outside that district, most rural houses have a septic tank and drain field. Your utility bill is the quickest check: if it shows water but no sewer charge, or you have a well, plan on septic. We can find and open the tank to confirm.
Do I need a septic inspection before building a garage, deck or pool?
Yes. Union County Environmental Health requires an existing system inspection before new construction on a property with a septic system, including garages, decks, swimming pools and room additions. Their staff locate the system with metal probes, so mark underground utilities first. We can uncover the tank and lines ahead of the county visit if they are hard to find.
Why do so many septic systems near Wingate use a pump or low-pressure pipe?
Much of the soil mapped around Wingate is shallow to rock or holds a perched water table in winter and spring, according to USDA soil survey data. When there is not enough usable soil for gravity trenches, the county often permits a pump tank feeding a low-pressure pipe (LPP) field instead. Those systems need regular operator inspections.
Who issues septic permits for land around Wingate?
Union County Environmental Health, On-site Water Protection Program, at 704-283-3553. You apply for a soil and site evaluation first; an Improvement Permit and then a Construction Authorization follow. The Construction Authorization is needed both to install the system and to get a building permit.
How often should a septic tank near Wingate be pumped?
Most households need pumping every 3 to 5 years. Bigger families, a garbage disposal or a pump system can mean a shorter interval. Pumping is also a good time to have the baffles, filter and pump checked.

“I contacted this company for a pre-buy inspection & pump out. From the first contact to the end, each person I dealt with was friendly and courteous. They were upfront regarding pricing and worked with us on scheduling while we waited to get the owner signature. The report they provided was thorough and they answered my questions after the fact as well to provide additional details. I would recommend them for an inspection if needed.”
