Septic Repair and Pumping in Harrisburg, NC

Let’s be straight about Harrisburg: almost everyone in town is on sewer. The Town’s collection system has about 142 miles of gravity line and roughly 9,600 connections, all sent to WSACC’s Rocky River plant. In its 2023 water supply report, the Town counted just 16 water customers who use a septic system.

Those few homes, plus the unincorporated land around town that the lines haven’t reached, still need someone who knows tanks. Dahl Septic Services is about 28 miles away in Albemarle. We repair, pump, inspect and install septic systems. Licensed and insured, NC license #9407I. Call or text (704) 218-9070.

Where septic still turns up around Harrisburg

  • Older homes in town that were never connected. The Town Code requires improved property inside the limits to connect once service is available in its area, so these are usually lots the lines don’t serve yet.
  • The southeastern part of the Harrisburg planning area. The 2018 Harrisburg Area Land Use Plan says this area historically had no public utilities. WSACC has since built a sewer line along Reedy Creek, and development near Rocky River Road and Hickory Ridge Road now has service. Farther out, it’s still wells and septic.
  • Soil is the limit. The same plan says soils outside the sewer areas are rated “very limited” for septic, so a repair or a new system can take a careful design.

Septic repairs

When a system near Harrisburg acts up, it’s usually the drain field, a cracked line, a failed pump or a broken baffle. We find the cause and fix it, including on systems another company installed. Before a repair, check whether a sewer line now reaches your street; if it does, connecting may make more sense. Septic repairs

Engineered systems need scheduled operator visits. Dahl Septic Services has a state-certified subsurface operator. Subsurface maintenance

Pumping and inspections

Pump every 3 to 5 years. Have the system inspected before you buy a house on septic, and treat pumping at the same visit as a recommended add-on, not a requirement. Septic tank pumping | Septic inspections

Permits outside the sewer area

Cabarrus County’s development ordinance (Section 12-4) is clear: if a site doesn’t have municipal sewer, Cabarrus Health Alliance has to approve a septic system before zoning and building permits are issued. On an existing system, the Alliance reviews the project and issues an approval letter, or a denial letter that gives the reasons. Applications go through Accela, and Environmental Health is at 704-920-1207.

Harrisburg septic FAQ

Are there still septic systems in Harrisburg?

A few. Town records list only 16 water customers with septic, and some unincorporated land around town is outside the sewer lines.

Do I have to connect to Harrisburg sewer?

Inside the town limits, the Town Code requires improved property to connect once service is available in its area. Ask the Town about your street.

Why was my building permit held for a septic approval?

Under the county ordinance, a site without municipal sewer needs Cabarrus Health Alliance’s approval (or its approval letter for an existing system) before zoning and building permits.
