Lake Tillery, NC
Septic on Both Sides of Lake Tillery
Lake Tillery is the reservoir behind the Tillery Hydroelectric Plant on the Pee Dee River, with almost 118 miles of shoreline split between Stanly County on the west and Montgomery County on the east. It is part of the Yadkin-Pee Dee Hydroelectric Project, now run by Duke Energy. On the Montgomery side, the county notes that towns such as Mount Gilead run their own sewer systems; lake homes outside town systems treat their wastewater on site, with a septic tank and drain field or a pump system.
Dahl Septic Services is based in Albemarle, on the Stanly side, and we work around the whole lake. Licensed and insured, NC license #9407I. Founded in 2023, backed by over a decade of hands-on septic experience. Call or text (704) 218-9070.
This page covers the whole lake and its shoreline lots. If you live in the Town of Norwood, near where the Rocky River meets the Pee Dee, see septic tank pumping in Norwood; for Badin Lake, upstream on the Yadkin, see our Badin page.

Pumping & inspections
Septic Service Lake Tillery NC: Pumping and Inspections
Lake houses load a tank unevenly: quiet for weeks, then a full house for a holiday weekend. Pumping keeps the solids from reaching the field. The EPA says household tanks are typically pumped every three to five years, and systems with pumps or floats need more frequent checks. Steep driveways and lids under years of mulch are routine for us. See septic tank pumping.

Inspections when a lake home changes hands
A Tillery home may have a tank close to the water, a pump tank sending effluent uphill or an added bedroom the original permit never counted. We locate and open the tank, check the pump tank and alarm, walk the field and camera the lines when needed. Pumping is a recommended add-on, not a requirement. See real estate septic inspections.
Shoreline rules
Duke Energy Shoreline Rules for Septic Systems
The land just above the water belongs to the hydro project, and lake normal full pond is 278.2 feet above sea level on Duke Energy’s lake level gauge. The project’s Guidelines for the Use of Leased Properties at Lake Tillery are blunt about septic: the licensee does not allow residential lessees to place any septic system components on its property, and existing components on that property that fail or need repair must be removed.
The same guidelines call for a vegetated buffer of at least 30 horizontal feet from the shoreline at full pond under state water quality rules, note that Lake Tillery is classified as a Water Supply-IV reservoir with a Critical Area extending half a mile from full pond, and say no ground-disturbing work happens on project land without Duke Energy’s approval. So when an old system near the water fails, the repair has to move onto your own land.
North Carolina’s setback rule adds its own distance: at least 50 feet from a lake’s normal water level, or 100 feet from a Class I or II reservoir. The county permit sets the final layout, and we build to it.
Soil & permits
Rocky Lake Lots and Two County Permit Offices
The hills around the lake are Carolina Slate Belt. In NRCS soil data for both shores, Badin and Tarrus soils lead the list, with Goldston, Georgeville and Herndon close behind. Badin’s type location is in Stanly County; it is moderately deep and found on slopes up to 55 percent. Goldston, described near Richfield, is shallow and more than a third rock fragments. Most rated soil map units near the lake are listed as very limited for conventional absorption fields, which is why so many lake lots use a pump tank with LPP or drip lines.
Which office permits your system depends on the shore. The west side is Stanly County Environmental Health in Albemarle (704-986-3675). The east side is Montgomery County Environmental Health in Troy ((910) 572-3304). Our septic permits in NC page covers both.

Repairs & installs
Repairs and New Systems on Lake Lots
We repair pumps, floats, alarms, lines, baffles and distribution boxes, and we repair or replace drain fields under a county repair permit, moving them back from the water when the rules require it. See septic repairs.
Installs
We install conventional, chamber, panel block, LPP and drip systems as the permit specifies. Concrete or plastic tanks are set as part of the complete job; we don’t sell tanks alone. See septic system installs.

Engineered systems
Pump Tank, LPP and Drip Maintenance
A pump system that sits idle between visits still needs its floats, alarm, filter and laterals checked. If your operation permit requires a certified subsurface operator, Dahl Septic Services has one. See subsurface maintenance.

Tank Locating, Decommissioning and Site Work
We find lost tanks with a probe and a sonde, camera the lines and add risers. When an old tank is retired, we pump it and crush or fill it in place; see septic tank decommissioning. For a new field on a wooded slope, we do the clearing and grading; see land clearing and site work. Many lake communities also have HOA rules or Duke lease terms, so check both before work near the shoreline.

FAQ
Lake Tillery septic questions
Can my septic system be on Duke Energy property at Lake Tillery?
No. The Lake Tillery leased-property guidelines do not allow residential lessees to place septic system components on the licensee’s property, and existing components there that fail or need repair must be removed.
Who issues septic permits around Lake Tillery?
It depends on the shore. Stanly County Environmental Health (704-986-3675) covers the west side; Montgomery County Environmental Health in Troy ((910) 572-3304) covers the east side.
How far does a septic system have to be from the lake?
State rules require at least 50 feet from a lake’s normal water level, or 100 feet from a Class I or II reservoir. The shoreline guidelines also call for a vegetated buffer of at least 30 feet from full pond.
Is my lake house on sewer?
Only if it is connected to a town sewer system. Most lake homes outside town limits use a septic tank and drain field or a pump system.
Why do so many lake lots have pump tanks?
The slate belt soils around the lake are often shallow or rocky, and many lots slope toward the water, so effluent is pumped to a field higher up or spread with LPP or drip lines.
Do you pump tanks at weekend and rental lake homes?
Yes. Heavy use on holidays loads a tank quickly, so lake homes that host big groups benefit from regular pumping and a look at any pump and alarm.
What are your hours?
Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Call or text (704) 218-9070, book online or request a quote.
