Anson County, NC

Anson County runs from the Rocky River on the Stanly County line south to South Carolina, with the Pee Dee River along its eastern edge. Wadesboro is the county seat, and the smaller towns of Ansonville, Morven, Lilesville, Peachland, Polkton and McFarlan are spread across mostly rural land. Away from the town water and sewer systems, homes and farms rely on septic, and many of those systems sit in soil that makes septic work harder than usual.

Dahl Septic Services pumps, inspects, repairs and installs septic systems across the county. Ansonville is about 20 miles from our Albemarle office and Wadesboro about 30. We are licensed and insured (NC #9407I). Founded in 2023, backed by over a decade of hands-on septic experience, with a certified subsurface operator on the team for LPP and drip systems. Call or text (704) 218-9070.

Soil

Triassic Basin Soils and Your Drain Field

The Wadesboro basin, a band of Triassic sedimentary rock, crosses Anson County. The NC Geological Survey’s homeowner guide to the Triassic basins warns that soils at many of these sites do not pass the percolation tests a conventional system needs.

Two soil series were first described right here. The White Store series has its type location 7.4 miles south of Wadesboro off NC 109, and the Polkton series 3.3 miles south of Polkton. Both are moderately well drained, with low saturated hydraulic conductivity, meaning water moves through them slowly. Polkton reaches soft bedrock at 20 to 40 inches. In the western part of the county, slate belt soils like Badin and Goldston are shallow to rock instead.

NRCS ratings in the Anson County soil survey put about 73% of rated acres in the very limited class for conventional septic absorption fields (NRCS Web Soil Survey). In practice that means more LPP and drip systems, more pump tanks, and a bigger payoff from regular pumping and maintenance. North Carolina rules set inspection schedules for those systems; drip systems, for example, are inspected twice a year.

Permits

Getting a Septic Permit in Anson County

Anson County Environmental Health handles onsite wastewater permits from its Wadesboro office, phone 704-994-3397. The county’s onsite septic and well application lays out the steps:

  1. Confirm zoning with Anson County Zoning and Planning.
  2. Fill out every section of the application. Incomplete ones are returned.
  3. Include the deed with a property description or the recorded plat, plus a property map with measurements from the county GIS site or your surveyor.
  4. Mark property irons and lines with flags or stakes every 50 feet, stake the building and driveway, and set the red flag at the road.
  5. Clear heavy brush so the site can be walked, without removing any soil. Rocky sites may need pits dug for the evaluation.

One soil evaluation covers up to 2 acres. For an expansion of an existing system, the county notes that a septic installer may need to locate the system and uncover the tank first, which is work we do. The application also covers private-option filings through an Authorized On-Site Wastewater Evaluator (AOWE) or an Engineered Option Permit (EOP).

FAQ

Anson County Septic Questions

Who issues septic permits in Anson County?

Anson County Environmental Health, part of the Anson County Health Department, at 704-994-3397. Check zoning with Anson County Zoning and Planning before you apply, because the onsite application asks for that approval first.

What do I have to mark before the Anson County soil evaluation?

The county application asks you to mark property irons and lines with flags or stakes every 50 feet, stake the house or building footprint and driveway, and put the red flag the office supplies at the road. The site has to be walkable and cleared of heavy brush without removing soil. On rocky land, the county may ask for pits to be dug.

Why do some Anson County lots need an engineered septic system?

Large parts of the county sit on Triassic basin rock, where soils such as White Store and Polkton drain slowly and stay wet near the surface for part of the year. NC Geological Survey notes that soils at many Triassic sites do not pass perc tests for conventional systems. Where gravity trenches will not work, the permit may call for a pump and low-pressure pipe or drip system.

Do you work in Wadesboro, Polkton and the other Anson towns?

Yes, for homes and businesses on septic anywhere in the county, including the areas around Wadesboro, Ansonville, Morven, Lilesville, Peachland, Polkton and McFarlan. Properties tied into a town sewer system do not need us for the sewer side.

Can you find and uncover my tank for a county permit visit?

Yes. When a system is being expanded, Anson County notes that an installer may need to locate the existing system and uncover the tank first. We probe for the tank, dig to the lids and can add risers so it is easy to reach afterward.
