How Union County handles septic
Union County Environmental Health runs the On-site Water Protection Program (704-283-3553, unioncountync.gov). It covers:
- Soil and site evaluations for new systems, repairs and expansions. The owner arranges a backhoe and operator for the visit.
- Permits. An Improvement Permit says the site works; a Construction Authorization is needed to install the system and to get a building permit.
- Existing system inspections before you add bedrooms, decks, porches, pools or detached buildings.
- Operation and maintenance inspections on a schedule for low-pressure pipe (LPP), pre-treatment and pump systems. This is a state-mandated program.
If you have an LPP or pump system and don’t know when it was last inspected, call us.
Building on a lot outside the sewer lines? We can help arrange the soil evaluation. You can pull the septic permits yourself, or we can assist with the paperwork. Before you commit to a design, book a consultation, and ask about financing for a new system or a major repair.

What customers say
“Fast, reliable, and reasonable pricing. I also appreciated the parable, honest, fair assessment of the septic system. It was also refreshing to see that there was no attempt to “upsell” or push for unnecessary services or equipment installation, that unfortunately a lot of other companies in this space try to push.”

Questions people ask
Do I need a permit to install a septic system in Union County?
Yes. Union County Environmental Health does a soil and site evaluation, then issues an Improvement Permit and a Construction Authorization. You need the Construction Authorization to install the system and to get a building permit.
How do I look up a septic permit in Union County?
Use the county’s online septic permit search, or call Environmental Health at 704-283-3553.
What is an LPP system, and does it need inspections?
A low-pressure pipe system pumps effluent out to the drain field under low pressure. Union County requires scheduled inspections for LPP, pre-treatment and pump systems.
Who can do a septic inspection for a home sale?
North Carolina requires point-of-sale septic inspections to be done by an inspector certified by the NC On-Site Wastewater Contractors and Inspectors Certification Board. We do them under that certification, license #9407I. See septic inspections in Monroe and Union County.
How much does septic pumping cost in Union County?
