Kannapolis grew up around the Cannon Mills textile plant, and today the city runs its own water and sewer system. Most homes in town are connected. A smaller group isn’t: older houses on lots the gravity mains never reached, and rural parcels past the edge of the city where a septic tank has always been the plan.
That second group is who we work for. Dahl Septic Services, based in Albemarle about 30 miles away, pumps, inspects, repairs and installs septic systems. Licensed and insured, NC license #9407I. Call or text (704) 218-9070.
When Kannapolis requires a sewer hookup
The City’s extension policy (Chapter 17 of the city code) matters if you’re on septic inside the city limits:
- If your developed property is within 150 feet of a City gravity sewer main and the septic system fails, breaks public health rules or needs reconstruction or repair, the code says to abandon the system and connect to sewer. The City Manager can waive that for unusual conditions or costs out of proportion.
- Outside the city limits, the City has no obligation to extend sewer. City Council can approve an extension and may ask for a voluntary annexation petition in return.
- Where a failing well or septic system is a confirmed public health threat, Council can direct City-funded extensions to fix it, once the county health department confirms the problem in writing.
So before you plan a septic repair inside the city, find out how far you are from the nearest gravity main.
Pumping and maintenance
Plan on a pump-out every 3 to 5 years for a typical household. We locate and open the lids, pump the tank, check the baffles and report what we found. Septic tank pumping
Pump tanks and low-pressure pipe systems need scheduled care. Dahl Septic Services has a state-certified subsurface operator. Subsurface maintenance
Inspections and repairs

Kannapolis septic FAQ
My septic system failed and I’m inside the city. Do I have to connect to sewer?
If any part of your property is within 150 feet of a City gravity sewer main, the city code generally requires it. Ask the City about a waiver if conditions are unusual. If the main is farther away, a septic repair permit from Cabarrus Health Alliance is the usual route.
Can I get City sewer outside the Kannapolis city limits?
Only if City Council approves an extension, and the City may ask for an annexation petition.
Where is the septic permit office?
